Epoch

Epoch - A period of time in history or a person's life, typically one marked by notable events or particular characteristics.

It's hard not to get nostalgic when one looks at childhood. It's incredible how in those few years you take in a lifetime of memories that are embedded in your emotions. The lump in the throat, the tear in the eye, your hair stands on end as you wonder where do I remember this from? We all have our own epochs where we remember things being different to how they are now.

We began concepting a test project back in Fall 2012 to use, at the time, the new Sony FS700. As with many projects we embark on, we soon found ourselves deep in a creative cocktail of ideas and an enthusiastic crew to help bring them to life.  The Milwaukee Avenue Historic District, here in Minneapolis is an iconic bike and pedestrian friendly avenue prohibited to motor traffic, which is like stepping onto a 1940's set.  On a chilly fall afternoon we brought our four selected subjects and production team to Milwaukee Avenue.  With a loosely storyboarded shot list we set out to explore the young girls coming together for an afternoon of play, centered around jump roping.  The activity of jump roping fit both, the period and look of our scene and was a perfect compliment to showcase elements of slow motion filmmaking that the camera we used has become known for.
This project was our first collaboration with the Picture Factory team.  The CineCopter they operate allows for some amazing aerial imagery and for our story, brings the piece to a cinematic end. The project was edited by JoLynn Garnes, Minneapolis based editor.
