Adidas | Head to Head | Vol. 1

One player in a thick, red bandana jumps quietly in place, his arms swinging up and down at his sides. A tightly strung net, just longer than the width of the table, separates him from his opponent.

Stories inspire connection. That’s the narrative of our work: Not just to capture the subject, scene or action, but to tell a story that is memorable, even familiar. There’s an innate challenge in capturing the intangibles of that story in a photograph—the unspoken dialog, the tension of the setting, the nuance of little shifts and changes in the scene. The more minimal the scene, the greater the challenge in capturing those nuances.

This spec project for Adidas exemplified that raw minimalism. There’s no fancy backdrop, no audience. We see two players and a table, and between the three exists a tension—like a binding glue—that tells the underlying story. The players’ hands grasping the paddles. The stare of a competitor hunting for an edge. The snap of the wrist as they hit the ball for the first time. These are the unplanned elements that breathe life into a photo (and moving visuals, too) the little pieces we don’t expect but patiently allow them to be revealed.

Every day, we challenge ourselves to push the boundaries of our experiences, our equipment and our comfort zones to deliver both the expected—and the unexpected.

*This project was an in-depth exploration that tapped many local creative partners. Tonight, we’re looking forward to a cast/crew screening party to say thanks as well as raise a glass to the finished video edit. We look forward to sharing this video along with the accompanying Behind the Lens episode with you in coming weeks.

Down South for the Holidays…

My family and I have a tradition of hitting the road every other holiday season, south bound to relax amid warmer temps and to spend time with my wife’s family near Lafayette, Louisiana.  This year’s three week, near 4,000 mile journey certainly had its share of visual highlights.  While a few of these iPhone images made my instagram feed, I did my best to keep this trip about family and taking in life at a slightly slower pace.

The South, specifically the route we took follows the Mississippi on down to New Orleans.  The collage is a map of sorts, offering a glimpse of time spent exploring places such as Hannibal, Missouri home of Mark Twain, and Tupelo, Mississippi to explore the childhood home of Elvis Presley.  Further south we always carve out an extra day or two for New Orleans and the French Quarter - so much to see amid the winding streets, colonial architecture, and seemingly endless energy.  Our final drive took us two hours east of The Big Easy to our destination city of Grand Coteau which lies in the heart of Cajun Country.  After about a week with extended family and holiday celebration we set off west for Austin, Texas for the final leg of our trip.  It was quite an amazing experience all around as this was our first time in Austin as a family; enjoying the people, sights, food, and certainly the weather.  In addition to roaming the city in all directions, I managed to carve out time to shoot a couple of personal projects that I look forward to sharing in days ahead.  Both subjects were small businesses that are thriving on trades of the past, one a taxidermist and the other a shop that specializes in custom denim apparel.

Here’s to the New Year and continued adventure that life brings to all of us who spend time in and around the presence of a camera.  I can’t thank all of our supporting partners enough including clients, crew, and of course the subjects who let us into their lives and ultimately make all of this possible.

Epoch

Epoch - A period of time in history or a person's life, typically one marked by notable events or particular characteristics.

It's hard not to get nostalgic when one looks at childhood. It's incredible how in those few years you take in a lifetime of memories that are embedded in your emotions. The lump in the throat, the tear in the eye, your hair stands on end as you wonder where do I remember this from? We all have our own epochs where we remember things being different to how they are now.

We began concepting a test project back in Fall 2012 to use, at the time, the new Sony FS700. As with many projects we embark on, we soon found ourselves deep in a creative cocktail of ideas and an enthusiastic crew to help bring them to life.  The Milwaukee Avenue Historic District, here in Minneapolis is an iconic bike and pedestrian friendly avenue prohibited to motor traffic, which is like stepping onto a 1940's set.  On a chilly fall afternoon we brought our four selected subjects and production team to Milwaukee Avenue.  With a loosely storyboarded shot list we set out to explore the young girls coming together for an afternoon of play, centered around jump roping.  The activity of jump roping fit both, the period and look of our scene and was a perfect compliment to showcase elements of slow motion filmmaking that the camera we used has become known for.
This project was our first collaboration with the Picture Factory team.  The CineCopter they operate allows for some amazing aerial imagery and for our story, brings the piece to a cinematic end. The project was edited by JoLynn Garnes, Minneapolis based editor.

LA highlights…

Some digital as well as analog highlights from last month's production in Los Angeles.  More and more our projects seem to meld a nice mix of business and pleasure, whether combining a test shoot or simply strolling streets (and in this case beaches) during downtime.  This time around we traveled with a crew of six, renting a palace of sorts amid palm lined streets near the canals of the Venice neighborhood.  Renting houses has been a big plus as far as travel over the past couple of years.  It feels much more like local living, much preferred with larger crews in places such as this.  It's a mere 1 degree today in Minneapolis.  Nice to think back on this time while we anxiously await our next tour south...

Horizon Fitness

This past July we collaborated with Horizon Fitness on their "Designed For Life" campaign.  The project was two-fold creating a "day in the life" montage video highlighting the Horizon line of treadmills, elliptical trainers, and exercise bikes as well as a library of still images for the accompanying print campaign.

The project was unique in that we were brought on in the early stages to storyboard and concept scenarios for each of the pieces of fitness equipment.  Over three days of production we captured the essence of their fitness equipment in lifestyle scenes stretching from indoor, outdoor, urban and rural.

Behind the Lens - Los Angeles, CA “Samsung”

"There is so much to do on a film set. It is an extraordinarily invigorating and wonderful place to be, when things are running well."  Ben Kingsley

The next installment of our Behind The Lens series, "Samsung - Los Angeles CA" is complete.  This second episode offers a glimpse into the on set culture over various locations from our 8 day still shoot for Samsung and Turner Duckworth.  If you remember back to June this year, we posted Samsung - The Directors Cut, an edit which highlighted the motion elements we captured video along with the stills for each of the scenarios.  We're constantly refining our process of capturing both still and motion, this episode shows the moulding of both mediums, as well as the large amount of talented people that were brought together for the production.

The episode was shot by Patrick Meehan and edited by Nathaniel Schmidt, view the full list of crew below. Keep an eye out for further Behind The Lens episodes in the new year.

UCare

UCare, like all healthcare insurance providers nationwide has been gearing up to embrace the changing healthcare laws.  Initio brought us on for a two-day production, capturing a series of lifestyle visuals for UCare's new enrollment program titled "UCare Choices."  Produced just outside the Minneapolis metro area we were presented with four individual concepts to shoot.  Like most of our projects these ideas are loosely scripted, allowing us freedom to work spontaneously and to capture moments that naturally unfold once our talent is interacting amid the location or scene.  Shown are some favorite selects as well as several final images that are currently featured on billboards, buses, online, as well as in print-ads.  In addition to stills, motion clips were captured throughout each of our four scenarios.  The :30 edit shown was produced by JCP to provide the creative team a sampling of the varied motion elements we came away with.  It's exciting to see many of these shots running on T.V. as part of the broadcast arm of this campaign.

A shout out to the creatives at Initio and UCare who were exceptional to collaborate with in addition to our producer Matthew Slimmer and the regulars of our production team.  The fact that our shoot ended with the crew taking turns cruising the lake on our client's jet-ski wasn't a bad way to say thanks and call it a wrap.   Work hard and play hard, especially mid-summer when production takes you to a cabin on a lake with good friends and great clients in tow.

Memory

MEMORY is the latest short from JCP; a story that explores the relationship between a young couple amid the natural environs of Los Angeles' Runyon Canyon. The location was chosen for the varied terrain and unique proximity within the city. An early rise with crew and talent in tow, the project was very loosely scripted. Direction was subtle and while we had tech-scouted the afternoon and evening prior, much of what we thought might unfold, vastly changed once we were on location with the subjects interacting and the camera rolling.

Edited by Nathaniel Schmidt, the visuals are presented as a non-linear narrative leaving room for interpretation by the viewer. Schmidt states “The goal was to evoke pure natural emotion without a script. Creating a subtle story gives the viewer an interpretational meaning to take away. We aren't telling the viewer what to feel and think, rather giving them the ability to make a human connection. Some will love it and some won't care for it. That's the beauty of the creative process.”

We are always working to evolve and refine our storytelling skills. Conceptual projects such as MEMORY both fuels and inspires myself and the crew, which we rely on for day-to-day commercial production. From the early studio discussions, to location, to working in the edit suite, something new always comes about while retaining a common thread to our process and visuals.

This blog post was drafted at 35k feet careening West over the Atlantic Ocean. On board, myself, John Fontana, and Eric Schleicher, all feeling a bit ragged and weary from another round of shooting for McDonald's. This particular voyage took us to Germany, Spain, and England where in addition to shooting at some of Europe and the UK's newest McDonald's restaurants, allowed time to appreciate the finer elements of travel abroad. Oktoberfest in Munich, paella in Spain, and cask drawn ales from various cities in the UK are a few highlights. It's personal projects such as MEMORY that pave the way to clients and projects of this nature. It's a constant hustle, but a rewarding one that broadens our scope and keeps us doing what we do.

A Minneapolis Morning & Bicycling Magazine

Bicycling has a great presence in the Twin Cities and it's no surprise when you spend a little time out on the bike paths criscrossing the city.  Bicycling Magazine brought us on to create imagery for a segment called "Know How / Big Picture," which is running in the current October issue.  We're always so excited to be bouncing around town with bicycles, cameras, and early morning light on an assignment, capturing the moment.  Our model Michale, happens to be an avid biker and was perfect for this project.  With my assistant and talent in the cab and three bikes in the bed, we set out for a few destinations in my 1965 Ford truck.  It didn't take long to compile a list of locations to hit, most of which were best accessed via bicycle.  The light that morning was quite beautiful and provided so many options as we all biked in and out of locations all around the metro area.  It was a great morning of shooting, sharing stories and collaborating together on this project.

Shine on Lone Star - Faces of Austin, TX…

Austin, Texas treads it's own path no matter how it's viewed: location, weather, people, politics, or food (trucks), the city is alive and buzzing top to bottom with eclectic energy and creativity on all fronts.  Upon wrapping a project near the Lone Star capital this past spring, we set out on South Congress Avenue to capture a series of portraits; faces that represent a city that shirks convention and embraces the "Keep Austin Weird" persona.  We set up our makeshift studio in the parking lot of the famed Hotel San José.  A simple yet visual backdrop caught our eye as an ideal location to accompany the varied people we spent a few minutes getting to know and profiling for this personal project.

"There is no dress-code in Austin. How you look and what you’re worth typically have little to do with each other here. In central Austin, it is quite common to see some scruffy, smelly hippie with dread-locks, tattoos and piercings driving a new Lexus or Mercedes. People in Austin like to look weird. The woman you see walking down the drag with the tattoo of a dragon across her back and the purple hair may be your child’s kindergarten teacher. Your congressman might be a leather-clad biker. And the girl in the coffee shop serving you a latte may have a Ph.D. in astrophysics. Don’t judge a book by its cover here."  A few thoughts on people, dress, and how they commingle from the website Texas Funny.

As summer winds down, we look forward to sharing a variety of still & motion based projects that have been sunning and are near completion.  Here's to a fresh start for all walks, whether work, school, or extended vacation...
